Google Daydream VR Headset

At present, it seems all technology companies are tapping into the opportunities provided by the Virtual Reality. Both the big and small firms are focusing on the VR, making it one of their top priorities in the future.

Google is not left out as it recently launched the Google Daydream, a virtual reality platform with its headset, Daydream view to experience the virtual world. Even though Google hasn’t wholly placed what it offers in any market unlike the HTC Vive which is geared towards the gaming world, it could be a good thing keeping the platform open just like its Android operating system.

The Google Daydream was announced in May 2016 at the Google I/O developer conference before the Daydream was later launched in November. But just like all good things take time, the project took a while before it could be launched as a serious VR platform. Google had started with the Google Cardboard which was an attempt to get augmented reality into the mainstream. The Google Daydream is expected to continue from there, and Google has put everything into it including good apps to go with it.

With its success with the Google Cardboard, the company has given third-party developers to contribute as well with their applications. This is in an attempt to make it as popular as the Android App Store.

What is Google Daydream?

It is a virtual reality platform created by Google and programmed into the Android operating system (Nougat 7.1 version). Compatible phones that use the platform’s hardware and software specs are used in the VR headset. The Daydream view is the second VR platform created by Google, the Cardboard being the first was produced to encourage people’s interest in VR and in a more affordable way. It was however built for compatible apps and phones and not in the operating system like the Daydream.

What does Google Daydream Do?

The Google Daydream combines both the Android smartphones and virtual reality for users to access content on their devices easily and to experience the virtual world through a viewer.

The platform offers a store where you can download and buy apps for your Daydream view such as videos. Users can access all of these through the use of a headset, and the UI is very impressive.

Google Daydream View

Right now, the Daydream View is the only headset that is used for the Google Daydream platform. All that is required is for compatible devices to be slipped into the compartment and users can view the VR content through it.

It is made from fabrics unlike other headsets which are made from either rubber or plastic; this makes it light in weight. Keeping it on for a long time won’t make you sweaty, and it is available in different colors such as crimson red. White and grey to suit your taste.

It gets connected to a smartphone through the use of NFC and capacitive nubs.

Specs and Controllers

The Daydream controller was also launched alongside the headset. It is mainly used to control the headset through proximity sensors it integrates to detect the user’s hands. It comprises a touchpad, circular buttons (one functions for app specification while the other functions as a home button), status light and volume buttons. It interacts with the virtual world by waving the device or through the buttons that are pressed by the user. It can be charged with a USB-C which can be purchased at the Google Store.

Google Daydream Compatability

At the moment, the platform only works with selected devices which are all Android-powered. They include Google Pixel and Pixel XL, Asus SenFone AR and ZTE Axon 7 and Motorola Moto Z. Some of these devices need their software to be upgraded to the Nougat before they can function.

Finally, although the whole functionality of the Google Daydream has not been fully figured with the number of developers promising to develop apps and games in the future. However, users can use this advantage to explore some of the biggest apps available such as Google Map, Youtube, Google Photos and Google Play. Other apps available are Ubisoft and Netflix, this promises a grand experience as well for gaming activities in the future.
