Unity is continuing to grow their XR platform by releasing a new package that allows developers to add hand tracking as an input without using headset-specific SDKs. This means users can now interact with things within the virtual environment using natural gestures. Now with this new XR Hands package, developers have access to Unity’s standard XR subsystem and OpenXR across multiple headsets such as Quest, HoloLens, and those planned in the future who already support hand tracking technologies. To make sure everything runs properly, it’ll require manually updating your app’s manifest to OpenXR 1.6.0 and making sure all necessary extensions are active in the OpenXR menu.
