The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners comes to Virtual Reality in 2019
One of the biggest television shows of the past decade, The Walking Dead is an intense tale about a post-apocalyptic world filled with zombies and survivors as the latter group tries to overcome the former, and itself, in order to establish some kind of society in a world gone to hell.
And, though the TV show has waned since its peak, The Walking Dead narrative video games still maintain a huge following and the next planned installment in the series, ‘Saints and Sinners’, looks set to bring the world of The Walking Dead to VR. Sky Dance Interactive announced at last month’s San Diego Comic-Con that the critically acclaimed series of games would be coming to virtual reality with a story set in post-apocalyptic New Orleans that “will challenge players to make their way through the iconic quarters, as they explore what has become a brutal, unforgiving wasteland.
Players will have to deal with others struggling to survive in what remains of this once vibrant city. In the world of The Walking Dead, the walkers are the least of your problems. Will you choose the path of a saint or that of a sinner?”
Details on the game are scant as of publication, including what specific platforms on which it will be released. It is expected that The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners will probably arrive on all major formats like Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and the Sony PlayStation 4, but nothing is set in stone as of yet.
Though the game is expected to arrive in 2019 gamers can expect to see more of it teased well ahead of that time.
The devs are touting the dueling concerns players will have to face in the game such as overcoming the zombies while also choosing whether or not to help fellow survivors. These kinds of moral choices have always existed at the heart of The Walking Dead’s narrative but putting it into a VR game may make the choices that much more visceral for players. Telltale’s Walking Dead series of games were widely praised for their marriage of video game mechanics and the series’ iconic narrative style.
Based on comic books of the same name, The Walking Dead really didn’t explode into the popular consciousness until the launch of AMC’s hit television series. Because of that, games like Saints and Sinners owe a lot to the television experience and it will probably be reflected in the narrative and how the game plays out.
Though not beholden to the more established zombie tropes we find in video games – like those in the Resident Evil series – there should be a good amount of survival horror action in this title nonetheless. One thing is certain, if gamers have ever wanted to experience what it might be like to live in the world of The Walking Dead saga, Saints and Sinners may give them the perfect distillation of that experience when it arrives on VR devices next year from Sky Dance Interactive.
