Virtual Reality Games You Should Play In 2019
One of the emerging segments of the video games industry that is starting to soak up even more developer dollars and talent is the virtual reality niche, a market that is expected to grow with the next generation of powerful hardware right around the corner.
Plus the rise of its sister technology augmented reality, only further bolsters this new space in gaming.
Though VR games didn’t quite take center stage at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, better known as E3, in LA this year, there were a few announcements that, nonetheless, are of note to fans of VR games. In this article, we’ve compiled ten of our most anticipated games coming out in 2019 and possibly beyond.
One trend we’re starting to see really take off is the developer’s willingness to explore new game types and narratives in VR.
Not only does this have us excited, but it should have you hyped, too. What many felt could just be a fad is turning into a real cornerstone of modern home console gaming, and we the gamers are benefitting in the bargain.
10. Stormland
This partnership between Oculus Studios and Insomniac Games is a sci-fi, open-world first-person shooter with a heavy emphasis on narrative and interaction with the wider game world. The main draw for this game is its promise of an open-world environment which, while common in more mainline games, is quite something unique in the VR space. Featuring graphics that are an amalgamation of cell-shading and polygonal graphics, Stormland looks like the right combination of narrative, gameplay, and graphical fidelity that could be one of the first major cross-genre epics for VR units.
9. Echo Combat
Another Oculus title, Echo Combat can best be described as a first-person tournament game set in the zero-g environment of outer space. Again the graphics keep it simple in order to keep it moving and the main focus of this title is, without a doubt, multiplayer arena play with friends. Currently in Early Access, this game is absolutely beautiful and includes some incredible mechanics.
8. Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot
In a further expansion of the Wolfenstein franchise, Bethesda is bringing the series to VR with a brand new adventure game, Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot. You will play as a hacker taking control of Nazi war machines in Paris, France.
7. Blade & Sorcery
Blade and Sorcery is one of the most brutal games in VR I have seen to date. Set to release late December 18 to early 2019, this game makes GORN and classic PC games like Chivalry look like childs play. A thunderdome gladiator style game featuring some ultra violent gameplay will be a sure hit this next year. I’m excited to see more development on this as it is currently in closed beta.
6. The Elder Scrolls: Blades
If you were hoping for an Elder Scrolls game along the lines of Skyrim to be built for VR then you might be waiting a little bit longer. Hopefully, though, The Elder Scrolls: Blades will help slake your thirst for all things TES when it drops in 2019. Ostensibly a dungeon crawler with an intuitive interface and most of the mechanics one would expect in a mainline Elder Scrolls title, Blades should be a little something different when it comes to HTC Vive.
5. Ghost Giant
Dropping for PSVR in 2019, Ghost Giant combines two genres that are typically found together, a ghost story and puzzle solving element, but also promises a kind of Disney-esque yarn about a young boy and the ghost that is protecting him from some danger.
4. Borderlands 2 VR
The highly stylized and well known shooter is finally coming to VR in 2019. Borderlands 2 VR playstation vr bundles are currently on pre-order and is currently set to be a PSVR exclusive.
3. Population: One
Said to be the ultimate battle royale game, Population: One is a large online multiplayer battle arena spanning over a large gaming map with up to 24 players. We don’t have a ton of info on this one yet, but will add more details as we get them. 2019 is going to be a great year for VR gaming.
2. Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown
No one is actually sure when this game is coming out for PlayStation VR but when it does Namco is promising an epic experience. If you’ve ever watched Top Gun and thought the fighter pilot scenes looked cool then Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown wants to give you that experience in VR. Originally slated for late 2017, the game could drop later this year for the 2018 holiday season or, at latest, in 2019. No one is quite sure yet but one thing is certain: Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown is going to be a dogfighting VR game like no other.
1. Lone Echo 2
The beautiful zero gravity experience is coming back and staying true to the original. We are really excited to see this one come to major vr headsets in 2019!
