Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of Super Smash Bros, has had a long and successful career in video game development. He recently started a YouTube series called “Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games” to share his philosophy with aspiring developers.
In one of his videos, Sakurai briefly discusses VR and encourages viewers to try it out for themselves to understand its strengths and weaknesses. He cites VR’s limited field-of-view as a potential problem but recommends that people overlook this downside and give VR racing games a try.
Sakurai himself has not created any VR content yet, but Oculus offered to contract him to make a VR game back in 2015. He declined at the time due to the small size of the VR audience, but that audience has grown significantly since then. It would be interesting to see if Sakurai’s opinion on VR has changed since then.
