Meta is gearing up to launch their newest VR headset, Quest 3. This new headset was noticed in the store app when viewing from inside the VR, where it showed up as ‘Quest 3’ – though on a mobile app and web browser, it says ‘New Quest’. It’s suggested that this appearance of “Quest 3” may be due to an innocent mistake rather than official confirmation. In October 2020 Meta’s CFO said we would see a release of the next generation consumer Quest towards later 2021, while its CEO previously mentioned that pricing for Quest 3 should fall somewhere around $300-$500 USD.
Additionally, apparent schematics were leaked back in September which depicted no facial or eye tracking but hinted at pancake lenses and a depth sensor—perhaps hinting at advanced mixed reality capabilities? Internal product roadmap presentations also state that Quest 3 will be two times thinner than their current model and have 41 new apps and games featured; they are also supposedly set with a “Smart Guardian” system for home-use protection as well as more expensive pricetag. Although no mentions have been made about phasing out older models such as the Quest 2; sales may still continue while we wait for Meta’s 2024 headset currently in development before making any final decisions down the line.
