John Carmack, the former CTO of Oculus and a key player in the formative years of virtual reality development, recently shared his thoughts about Sony’s upcoming PSVR 2 headset, which is set to launch this month. He praised its technical potential due to its tethered OLED display combined with PlayStation 5’s ray tracing performance capabilities, but was not optimistic about its success. According to Carmack on Twitter, he doesn’t expect the VR headset to be very successful at $600 per unit given current market conditions. He suggested that addressable market size matters more than global coverage for developers due to lower barriers for entry into fewer countries. Other factors have contributed uncertainty such as reports claiming production forecasts were slashed in half by Sony and it being worth over $1000 all-in when factoring cost of console needed paired with the device itself. These are highlights worth considering before invest inthe highly anticipated experience coming later this month from Sony on February 22nd as PSVR 2 launches worldwide.
