After years of being one of the first popular VR-based social networking services, Microsoft’s acquisition of AltspaceVR in 2017 seemed to successfully keep it alive and running. Unfortunately this week it was decided that Microsoft is shifting “their focus to support immersive experiences powered by Microsoft Mesh”, leading them to announce the closure of AltspaceVR on March 10th 2023. Content creators with content stored on Altspace are offered instructions for downloading their own works before the closing date, however full Worlds from AltSpace cannot be downloaded or ported directly onto an alternative platform due ownership concerns. Although a sad ending for those who came to enjoy using AltSpace as a community hub within its Virtual Reality world, people can rejoice at the new possibilities opened up within Microsoft’s next effort – Mesh.
