Mark Zuckerberg recently announced that Meta, the virtual reality and augmented (VR/AR) technology leader, is beginning several rounds of layoffs over the next few months as a part of its “Year of Efficiency”. According to his note to employees, these round of layoffs include their recruiting team this week along with tech groups in April and business in May. This will further reduce Meta’s headcount by 10,000 which currently stands at 86,000. The news comes as the company faces increased competition from other players such as Pico 4 and Sony’s PlayStation VR2 amidst reports that they have already sold 20 million Quest headsets.
However, there is still faith at Meta for their future plans into metaverse experiences and computing platforms leading it back on track albeit under different economic realities. Executives are also cognisant to the fact that trust may be better built through face-to-face interactions like when Meta engineers join in person rather than remotely though more study is needed for confirmation. All changes must keep up with ever altering markets but prove crucial towards success routes especially during times like these!
