Meta is transitioning their support for apps built for the Quest platform from Unreal Engine 4 to 5.1, providing developers with new opportunities such as upgraded visuals, improved object counts and virtualized geometry system Nanite and global lighting system Lumen. While these two headlining features are not designed to be used on mobile devices, developers may still benefit from upgrading to UE5 by utilizing OpenXR which is the only VR API supported by Meta in version 5.1 of the engine. Support for bug fixes in UE4 will run all the way until December 2023 however additional resources can be accessed through Meta’s GitHub repository even after this date has passed; Quest 1 users can look forward to separate binaries that will allow them an upgrade path while those opting to develop with Unity will continue to enjoy its relative simplicity and larger market share when compared too Epic’s solution.
