Oculus Quest 1, the first standalone headset released by Facebook’s Oculus division in 2018, is getting phased out and ceasing all updates this year. Developers may continue to release apps for the device until 2024, but users of the original headset won’t be able to create or join a party—or use any other built-in social features on their devices after March 5th 2023.
Mark Zuckerberg debutedQuest 1 with much enthusiasm (“This is it! This is the all-in-one VR experience that we have been waiting for.”). Since then Meta has seen success with its XR2 processor in both Quest 2 and Pro models, signalling a possible upgrade to an even more powerful XR chip later this year. Despite these changes, users can still enjoy available apps and needed bug fixes up until early ’24 – making sure existing games and experiences don’t become quickly outdated technology before their time.
