Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2, the work-focused version of its iconic but once maligned smartglasses, is being discontinued by Google. Starting on March 15th 2021, it will no longer sell Glass Enterprise 2 and it will only support this device until September 15th 2023. The last system experience images for the device were released to remain available at least until April 1st 2024. This discontinuation follows a launch in 2017 as a revival from 2015 when production was first ceased due to public backlash that had spawned ‘glasshole’ criticisms about launching a consumer focused version of the device.
The demise of Glass for enterprise may be indicative of bigger plans in store; now emphasizing real time translation and AR turn-by-turn navigation with their early AR prototypes as well as emerging competition from Apple’s upcoming Mixed Reality headset rumored to arrive mid 2023 and Meta prepping multiple iterations of their Quest Headsets. Ultimately, strong evidence points towards commercializing all-day AR glasses sometime soon which could be considered an eventual replacement for devices like Glass Enterprise Edition 2.
