AntVR, a once struggling XR headset startup has reemerged with an innovative new approach to optics for instantly switching between AR and VR modes. Now exhibiting at CES 2023, the company is showcasing three sizes of its mixed waveguide AR optics – from 6mm thick to 10.5mm thin – each providing up to 120° field-of-view. This remarkable technology works using half of a display above the eye and half below which are then fused together into one image as it reaches the eye; this process enables such a slim profile without hindered visual immersion. The AntVR prototypes also offer instant dimming functionality; this could potentially provide users with an effective backdrop in front of their platforms’ virtual reality content while allowing them to remain connected to their real environment simultaneously. While there are still some technical questions left unanswered regarding distortion, power consumption or other factors before any viable headsets can be put on market shelves, AntVR’s novel circuitry looks promising so far in moving forward towards possible future mass production development of consumer headsets that take advantage of both augmented and virtual realities features.
